About Free Pursuits
Why do most of us work in jobs we don’t really love? Why do we give up the best years of our lives in support of someone else’s vision while living for the weekends?
Why do we put off the life we want to live until retirement?
Hi, I’m Corbett. These are the questions I started asking myself after a few years into my pursuit of the “typical” American dream. At some point, I realized I didn’t want my life to equal a bigger house in the suburbs and more consumer junk.
Most importantly, I realized I didn’t want to work a 9-5 (9-7 really) for someone else for 40 years while waiting for retirement.
I wanted to do something about it, so I quit my cushy job and jumped with both feet into the adventure of self employment. My lifestyle goals are still a work in progress, but each day is more exciting now that I’m honest with myself about what I want from life.
I started this blog on a six-month sabbatical my wife and I took to Mexico. We took the trip to learn Spanish, take up surfing and fulfill a life-long dream of getting to know the country better. We also went to evaluate our priorities and decide how to live the next chapter of our lives.
On that trip, we met lots of interesting people who had designed lifestyles that I originally thought were only reserved for the rich or retired.
Some of our new friends were location independent, some digital nomads, some worked only half of each year and some were on mini-retirements. It really opened our eyes to a whole different way of living.
Most importantly, we learned that you don’t have to live how everyone else does. There is a richer, more passionate life waiting for you outside of the typical deferred-life plan of the status quo.
I’m building a community of adventurous, motivated people who want to challenge themselves to live a more fulfilling life. For you that could mean becoming a freelancer, starting your own business, moving to another country, becoming an artist or musician or whatever other dream you have.
Whatever you decide, this blog and the community of people who read it are here to help. Please join us.
